Images & Text

I’ve always worked well in that space right between the worlds of language and images.

As an art director and designer in Animation, working from scripts and storyboards, the job is to tell a story with colour, shape, texture and light. While communications and UX writing is the other side of the coin, sinking into words, how they flow and how they appear on a page or screen.

But when I get to craft something with them together, that’s probably when I light up the most.

In university I created 2 books of poetry, including images with the text and stitched them together by hand in small print runs. As a visual artist, I’ve loved incorporating bits of text into a piece and I’m now working on a book paintings with tiny narrative poems, hopefully to be published in the winter of 2025.

Porchlight book project: even in the dark, there is beauty here.

For this project, I am telling a story with my two favourite things together: images and words.

It’s been a very back and forth process: working through the themes, stitching them into a storyline and flow, creating thumbnail sketches for pages and spreads, working out the mini poems to go with the images and creating the final paintings.

It’s felt very much like weaving. Working on a bit of text, sketching and painting, taking a step back to see the whole again and then dipping in and out of the text and words. Nudging a story forward with each iteration until a clearer form appears.

Writing for Games

As work in animation is going a bit of a transition, I’ve put together a portfolio to showcase my abilities in narrative writing for games.
