UX/UI Design & writing

I am a versatile UX designer, writer and educator and utilize my broad background in visual art, illustration, graphic design, creative writing and leadership roles to craft intelligent user-centered design solutions for public and private sector clients.

I have a BA in Creative Writing (UBC) and spent over 6 years in UX Design, writing, editing, graphic design and branding for digital and print, crafting design solutions and content for public and private sector clients before I shifted gears. I spent 10 years in Animation developing my storytelling chops as I progressed from video editing, bg artist and design roles into Art Direction. I currently teach Drawing at Emily Carr University.

If you’re looking for a multidisciplinary, energetic team player who loves the challenge of distilling a message into beautiful, straightforward, engaging content to connect people, build community and make a difference, let’s chat.

My mom has a counselling practice located in Victoria BC and her previous website was outdated and needed a refresh to communicate her expertise and approach to new clients looking for assistance. Her current practice is mostly focused on adults 35 – 75 and couples with some work done with families. Her needs were fairly straightforward:
  • Create a calm, inviting site for new and current clients that would demonstrate her approach and style, and encourage people ready to work towards making changes in their lives to reach out and connect
  • Communicate the topics she has the most experience working with
  • Display her educational credentials and life experience in particular areas
  • Clearly list appointment fees, services she provides and her office location
  • Advertise a free consultation for new potential clients and contact information for existing clients to book a new appointment
  • Maintain a professional appearance for clients as well as the regulatory bodies in the province

We started by brainstorming about the information we wanted on the site, and the structure that would work best. We settled on a handful of pages and created this sitemap:

Next, I started the design process with paper wireframes to explore the design options for the home page in a way that allowed for quick iterations and revisions. We chose our favourite pieces from each:

Next up, I moved the design into Figma to create a digital wireframe, laying out design elements with the usual boxes and shapes representing images, text and buttons.

Once we had a chance to chat about the layout and flow of information, I moved onto the Lo-Fi prototype in Figma, and then added the links to create a working prototype.

And lastly….

I built the site in WordPress, designed the logo and then created colour themed header images for each page. And once my mom was happy with the look of the site, we’d finessed the copy, and I tested its responsive versions on a desktop computer, several tablets, android and iphone… and then we went live!
